The Fashion Technology Academy (FTA) Leicester has proudly partnered with emerging ethical label Atelier Macleod to produce the brand’s latest capsule collection of upcycled, cropped t-shirts. The collaboration represents more than just a production run – it’s a shared commitment to sustainable design, ethical manufacturing, and revitalising UK garment-making.
Founded by designer Niamh Macleod, Atelier Macleod is fast becoming known for its refined aesthetic and purpose-driven ethos. Working closely with the skilled team at FTA Leicester, Niamh brought her latest collection to life using only reclaimed fabrics each piece created with longevity and environmental responsibility in mind.
“It’s important for us as a brand to support the UK’s garment industry,” said Niamh.
“It’s a true craft, and we have so many talented people who could have fantastic jobs in this field. I’m really excited to be a part of this fashion revival.”
Launched in 2024, Atelier Macleod began as a grassroots project, with Niamh designing and selling limited runs at local markets. The brand has since evolved into a transparent, sustainability-led fashion label rooted in the principles of slow production and circular design.
Niamh draws inspiration from her French upbringing and UK life, merging timeless tailoring with modern, wearable shapes. But it was her time studying fashion that sparked a deeper transformation in her approach.
“When I studied fashion, I began uncovering facts I couldn’t ignore – like how the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global water pollution,” she explained.
“In some communities, that pollution causes serious health issues. Once you’ve learned that, you can’t go back to business as usual.”
Every garment under the Atelier Macleod label is crafted with care—from sourcing upcycled materials to supporting UK-based garment workers. The recent collaboration with FTA Leicester demonstrates how smaller brands can scale ethically with the right support.
“We don’t claim to be perfect,” Niamh added.
“But every choice we make is intentional. Our values are stitched into everything we do—and that will never change.”
FTA Leicester provides both production services and vital training opportunities for the next generation of garment professionals. The partnership with Atelier Macleod highlights the facility’s growing role in fostering a more sustainable and inclusive fashion industry in the UK.
“We were thrilled to support Atelier Macleod with this production run,” said Jo Bean, Studio Manager at FTA Leicester.
“It’s a joy to work with designers who are creatively inspiring and genuinely committed to sustainability. Collaborations like this show what’s possible when values align.”
