Fashion Technology Academy & ATMF Supports Community Repair Café Initiative

On 5th March 2026, the Fashion Technology Academy (FTA) Leicester and the Apparel & Textile Manufacturers Federation (ATMF) proudly collaborated with Leicester Community Links CIC to deliver a Repairs and Upcycle Workshop at the Pepul Centre, an event that highlighted the power of community, sustainability and shared learning.

The workshop formed part of the wider Repair Café programme, bringing together a diverse mix of participants united by a common goal: reducing waste and extending the life of everyday items. From clothing repairs to upcycling projects, attendees were encouraged not only to fix their belongings but also to gain practical skills that promote long-term sustainable habits.

What made the event particularly impactful was the strong sense of community spirit throughout the day. Participants didn’t simply arrive, repair, and leave, they stayed to engage, exchange ideas and share personal stories. The environment fostered open learning, where knowledge flowed freely between volunteers, professionals, and community members alike. This collaborative atmosphere empowered individuals to feel more confident in repairing items themselves rather than discarding them.

FTA Leicester’s involvement played a key role in supporting the delivery of the workshop, offering expertise and hands-on guidance in sewing and garment repair. Their contribution reinforced the importance of education and skill-sharing in tackling environmental challenges at a local level.

Reflecting on the event, Taruna Mistry, CEO of Leicester Community Links CIC, said: “Community members came together to repair and learn sewing skills. FTA (ATMF/FEL) Leicester has provided great support by coming together and helping us in delivering this workshop. It was inspiring to see how organisations like FEL/ATMF help small community like us. This really shows how small actions can make big difference for both planet and people.”

The collaboration proved both inspiring and rewarding for everyone involved. It demonstrated how grassroots initiatives like Repair Cafés can play a vital role in promoting environmental responsibility while strengthening local connections. FTA Leicester looks forward to continuing its support for similar initiatives.
